K-3 x Yoshino Wood, A Sugi Wood Surfboard Crafted in Japan
Some objects are defined by their function. Others transcend it.
Created by K-3 in collaboration with Yoshino Wood, this exceptional surfboard brings together Japanese forestry, contemporary craftsmanship and the expressive language of K-3. Made from Sugi wood sourced from the Nara region of Japan, the piece required more than a year of development, shaping and meticulous finishing.
Sugi, often referred to as Japanese cedar, has been cultivated in Japan for centuries and is valued for its warmth, distinctive grain and natural lightness. Here, the wood is not simply a material. Its character remains visible across the entire surface of the board, with each line and tonal variation becoming part of the composition.
The elongated form was shaped with exacting precision, preserving the natural beauty of the timber while achieving the balance and fluidity associated with a traditional surfboard. Its polished surface reveals the depth of the wood beneath, creating changing reflections as light moves across it.
The graphic artwork unfolds organically along the board. Rhythmic lines evoke waves, currents and topographical contours, while expressive black silhouettes introduce a sense of movement and mystery. A contemplative figure emerges from the composition, surrounded by elements inspired by Japanese visual culture and the forces of nature. The K-3 signature is integrated directly into the design, becoming part of the artwork rather than an applied mark.
Every stage of the project demanded patience. The selection and preparation of the Sugi wood, the construction of the board, the application of the illustration and the successive layers of protective finish were undertaken with particular care. The result is a surface of remarkable clarity and depth, where the grain, drawing and sculptural volume remain in constant dialogue.
The reverse of the board was deliberately left unadorned, allowing the uninterrupted Sugi grain to speak for itself. This contrast between the expressive face and the quiet purity of the underside reflects an essential Japanese sensibility, balancing ornament and restraint, energy and stillness.
Presented within the contemplative atmosphere of a Japanese temple, the completed surfboard assumed a presence beyond that of a sporting object. Resting among dark timber architecture, tatami, cushions and filtered light, it appeared almost ceremonial, connecting the forest from which it originated with the ocean it was shaped to encounter.
This project embodies the creative philosophy of K-3, where craftsmanship becomes a meeting point between cultures, disciplines and emotions. It is at once a functional surfboard, a sculptural object and a singular expression of Japanese material heritage.
More than one year in the making, the K-3 x Yoshino Wood surfboard is a tribute to time, precision and the enduring relationship between nature and human hands.
